Dehler reveals initial plans for a new 34. The performance cruiser can be customised thanks to numerous options

30 years ago, the Dehler shipyard built the legendary Dehler 34, at that time a further development of a regatta yacht and thus the first real performance cruiser from a large-scale production shipyard. With success, the Dehler 34 was sold no less than 1300 times in total. Now, 30 years later, Dehler is reviving the legend once again with a completely different boat.

As usual with Dehler, the plans come from the renowned office of Judel/Vrolijk & Co in Bremerhaven. And the sporty sailing characteristics of the new boat are also the main focus. The vertically sloping bow in combination with the short overhang at the stern results in a long waterline for maximum performance under sail.

If you are interested in the Dehler 34, you can put together your own boat from a varied list of options and feasibilities to meet your exact requirements and wishes. Sporty touring sailors will want the boat with double steering wheels (optional), folding bathing platform, cockpit table, aluminium rig, moderate hull appendages and L-keel. Ambitious regatta sailors, on the other hand, will choose a more sporty version. The boat is also available with an open stern without a bathing platform, but with tiller steering (standard equipment). A 73 centimetre higher but lighter carbon fibre rig is also available, and the boat can be fitted with a performance rudder blade and a deeper but lighter T-keel.

In the regatta-optimised version with carbon fibre rig and T-keel, the Dehler 34 should be around 500 kilograms lighter than the same boat in the cruising version and also have around six square metres more sail area. Dehler thus calculates a performance advantage of around 20 seconds per nautical mile sailed in favour of the sports version. According to the ORCi handicap, a GPH value of 633 is targeted for the competition boat.

The interior design envisages a layout with two cabins and a large wet room. In the saloon, the two side sofas can also be used as additional berths. The berths are long enough for this. For the forward cabin, the customer can choose between a separable cabin with a door or an open main bulkhead without a partition to the forward cabin. Regatta sailors who want their Dehler 34 to be particularly light can also get the interior in a weight-reduced version with composite furniture.

The hull and deck of the new Dehler 34 are built as a GRP sandwich construction with a balsa wood core. The hull is reinforced as standard with the new "Carbon Cage" developed by Dehler. The structural reinforcements made of carbon fibre give the hull around 20 percent more rigidity. For the market launch, Dehler is quoting a base price of 129,110 euros including 19 per cent VAT and a single set of am-wind sails.

The first Dehler 34 boat will be ready in August 2016 and will then be presented.
